Wispr Flow alternatives: what to use for Mac and Windows dictation

October 21, 2026 · 9 min read

Last updated 21 October 2026. Prices checked on each vendor's own page.

Wispr Flow's free plan stops at 2,000 words a week on desktop. At a typical speaking pace of 150 words a minute, that's about 13 minutes of talking. Pro removes the cap for $15 a month, or $144 a year.

If the cap, the price or cloud processing is why you're looking, one of the six apps below fits better. We make Lispr, and every app here gets a limitation, ours included.

One limitation per app

AppLimitation
Wispr FlowCloud only and subscription only, and the free cap covers about 13 minutes of speech a week.
LisprIt needs a connection and has no phone app, and free dictation pauses at 60 minutes a week until Monday. Its Concise mode trims filler, but Lispr doesn't rewrite for tone the way Wispr Flow does.
SuperwhisperAI modes and the faster models sit behind Pro, and setup takes longer.
Aqua VoiceThe free plan holds 1,000 words in total, and it covers 49 languages.
VoiceInkApple silicon Macs on macOS 14.4 or later only, with no Windows app.
MacWhisperBuilt for recordings, with live dictation as a Pro extra. Mac only.
Apple DictationOne language at a time and no custom vocabulary list.

The six alternatives

1. Lispr: a bigger free plan and translation on a key

Lispr is our app. Hold the dictation key, speak, and your words appear at your cursor when you release it, on a Mac or a Windows PC. The free plan counts time: 60 dictation minutes a week, reset every Monday. At 150 words a minute that's roughly 9,000 words, against Wispr Flow's 2,000. You don't need an account to start.

Pro costs $79 a year or $7.99 a month, and an email sign-in carries it to every device on your account. On annual plans, three years of Lispr Pro cost $237 and three years of Wispr Flow Pro cost $432.

Lispr types what you said. Formatting has three modes in Settings. Off inserts the transcript unchanged, Light adds punctuation, paragraphs and lists without removing words, and Concise also trims filler and repetition. If you rely on Wispr Flow to rewrite tone for each app, Lispr won't do that for you.

It does translate as you speak. Hold a translation key with the dictation key and the translation lands instead, in any of 32 target languages, on the free plan. Median latency is 346 ms from key release to text, measured on our servers across live traffic. Our servers don't store your audio; the transcription provider keeps it for up to 30 days for abuse review, then deletes it.

2. Superwhisper: local models and a lifetime license

If you want AI modes without sending audio to the cloud, Superwhisper comes closest. Its free plan runs local Whisper models with no word cap. Pro costs $84.99 a year or $249.99 once and adds cloud models, AI modes and context awareness. One license covers your Macs, Windows PCs, iPhone and Android phone. Expect to spend some time choosing models and building modes.

3. Aqua Voice: the cheapest cloud subscription here

Aqua Voice feels closest to Wispr Flow: cloud processing, AI cleanup and apps for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. Pro costs $8 a month billed yearly, $96 a year. Aqua runs its own model, Avalon, and markets it on technical vocabulary. The free plan is 1,000 words in total, so you'll decide within a day of testing.

4. VoiceInk: pay once, keep audio local

VoiceInk runs Whisper on Apple silicon Macs, keeps audio on the device and costs $25 to $49 once, depending on how many Macs you cover. The code is open source under GPL v3. You'll need macOS 14.4 or later, and its AI cleanup runs through your own provider keys.

5. MacWhisper: for recordings more than dictation

If you used Wispr Flow's Notetaker for meetings or voice memos, MacWhisper transcribes files on your Mac instead. Pro costs €64 once. For live dictation into other apps, pick one of the apps above.

6. Apple Dictation: the free built-in option

Apple Dictation has no cap and no cost, and on Apple silicon it processes supported languages on your Mac. It types filler words as you say them and listens in one language at a time. See Apple dictation alternatives for Mac for the full comparison.

Wispr Flow alternatives on Windows

Wispr Flow runs on Windows, so the trade-offs there match the Mac. Three of the apps above have Windows versions.

Lispr for Windows runs on Windows 10 or later, 64-bit. The installer is about 14 MB and lives in the system tray. Microsoft Azure Trusted Signing signs it, so SmartScreen shows "Codebridge Technology, Inc." as the verified publisher. Right Ctrl starts dictation, and Ctrl plus Shift triggers translation.

Superwhisper's Windows app uses the same license as the Mac app; it arrived later than the Mac version. Aqua Voice runs on Windows 10 and 11.

Windows 11 also has voice typing built in: press the Windows logo key and H in any text field. If you want to control the whole PC by voice, look at Windows 11's Voice Access or Dragon Professional for Windows. Lispr transcribes and translates; it doesn't take commands.

For one app in depth, read Wispr Flow for Windows, which covers what Wispr Flow does on a PC and what it costs, or Superwhisper for Windows, which lists what its Windows version still lacks.

How we compared

We read each vendor's pricing page or documentation on 28 September 2026. The word estimates assume 150 spoken words a minute. We haven't measured other apps' accuracy or latency under matching conditions, so the tables leave those out. Lispr's 346 ms is our own server-side median on live traffic.

Frequently asked questions

Wispr Flow alternative

The best Wispr Flow alternative depends on why you're leaving. For a bigger free plan and a lower price, Lispr gives you 60 dictation minutes a week with no account, and Pro costs $79 a year against Wispr Flow's $144. For local processing, Superwhisper (Mac, Windows and phones) and VoiceInk (Mac) keep audio on your device. For the closest cloud experience at a lower price, Aqua Voice costs $96 a year.

What's the best dictation app for MacBook?

Start with Apple Dictation: it's free, and on Apple silicon MacBooks it processes supported languages on the device. Add a dedicated app when you hit its limits. Lispr adds mid-sentence language switching, translation and a custom vocabulary in a 6 MB app. Superwhisper and VoiceInk run AI models locally. Wispr Flow rewrites your speech with AI. On an Intel MacBook, a cloud app such as Lispr spares your processor the work of running a speech model.

Best voice typing software for Mac users

For typing by voice into email, chat and AI tools all day, use a push-to-talk app: Lispr (free plan, about 99 languages, translation) or Wispr Flow (AI rewriting, phone apps). For private, offline typing, use Superwhisper or VoiceInk. For long recordings, MacWhisper. For a few sentences a day, Apple Dictation is enough.

Does Wispr Flow work offline?

No. Wispr Flow processes speech in the cloud. Lispr and Aqua Voice also need a connection. Superwhisper, VoiceInk and MacWhisper work offline with local models, and Apple Dictation does on Apple silicon in supported languages.
