Dictation for lawyers: the writing Lispr speeds up

Last updated 21 October 2026.

A lawyer's week holds more writing than any filing: articles for a bar journal, client alerts on new rules, research notes, precedents for the firm's library, training for juniors and a steady run of internal email. Most of it names no client, and you speak about three times faster than you type.

Lispr fits that writing. Hold the dictation key, speak, release, and the words appear at your cursor in Word, Google Docs, your email or your browser, on Mac or Windows.

Articles, client alerts and business development

A regulation changes on Monday and clients expect your alert by Wednesday. Dictate the first draft in one pass, covering what changed and what clients should do about it. With Formatting set to Light, Lispr adds punctuation and paragraph breaks and deletes nothing, so the draft keeps your phrasing and you edit instead of facing a blank page.

The same approach works for bar journal articles, LinkedIn posts, conference talks, firm bios and capability statements.

Research notes on cases and legislation

Summarize a new judgment while the reasoning is fresh: hold the key, say what the court decided and how it affects your practice area, and release. Notes on statutes, regulations, commentary and published judgments carry no client confidences, so they suit cloud dictation.

Add the terms you use most to the custom vocabulary: courts, statutes, Latin phrases such as res judicata or inter alia, and your colleagues' names. Lispr spells them the same way each time, and auto-grow adds correct spellings from your recent dictations about once a day. The list lives on your computer, with no copy on our servers. Lispr has no built-in legal dictionary, so this list is where your legal terms get their spelling.

Precedents, know-how and training

Knowledge lawyers and senior associates spend hours on generic material: model clauses, checklists, practice notes, internal guides and sessions for trainees. Talk a practice note through as you would explain it to a junior, then tidy the draft. Law lecturers use the same method for lecture notes, seminar questions and exam feedback.

Internal email and firm admin

Staffing, scheduling, recruiting, marketing plans and practice-group updates fill much of a lawyer's inbox. Keep the key in reach and answer each one in the time it takes to say the reply. Lispr restores your clipboard after it inserts text, so whatever you copied before dictating is still there.

Work in two languages

Cross-border teams write in two languages all day. Lispr transcribes about 99 languages and follows you when you switch mid-sentence. To write in the other language, hold a translation key together with the dictation key: speak Ukrainian or Polish, and the English version appears at your cursor. Names and technical terms pass through untranslated, and translation into 32 languages comes with the free plan.

Treat a translation as a first draft and check terms of art before you send it, since a concept in one legal system may have no exact match in another.

Know what to keep out

Lispr sends your audio to a cloud transcription provider. Our servers don't store it; the provider keeps it for up to 30 days for abuse review and then deletes it, and nothing trains a model on your voice or text. Recording sharing stays off unless you turn it on, so leave it off.

Privileged communications, client-identifying facts and anything under a confidentiality obligation fall under your firm's rules on cloud services. If those rules don't cover dictation, keep that material out of Lispr. Lispr has no SOC 2 report, audit log, single sign-on or admin console, so a firm that requires those for client work needs a tool with enterprise controls for it.

Try it on your next article

  1. Download Lispr for Mac (macOS 11 or later) or Windows 10 or later. The free plan needs no account.
  2. In Settings > Formatting > Mode, choose Light.
  3. Add 20 terms to the vocabulary: courts, statutes, Latin phrases and colleagues' names.
  4. Open your next article or client alert, hold the dictation key and talk through the first section.

If you dictated with Dragon, drop the spoken punctuation. Lispr has no punctuation commands, so saying "comma" types the word, and Light mode adds the punctuation for you.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lispr good for legal writing?

Yes, for the writing around your matters: articles, client alerts, research notes on public law, precedents, training and internal email. For privileged or client-identifying material, follow your firm's policy on cloud services, because Lispr sends audio to a cloud transcription provider.

Can Lispr spell legal terms and case names?

Add them to the custom vocabulary and Lispr spells them the same way each time. The list stays on your computer. Lispr has no built-in legal dictionary, so add your terms before your first long session.

Does Lispr work in Microsoft Word?

Yes. Lispr types into any field where you can place a cursor, including Word, Google Docs, email and browser-based tools, on Mac and Windows.

Does Lispr keep my audio?

Codebridge servers don't store it. The transcription provider keeps audio for up to 30 days for abuse review, then deletes it, and nothing trains a model on your voice or transcripts. Your last 200 dictations stay on your computer as text.

How much does Lispr cost?

The free plan gives you 60 dictation minutes a week, reset every Monday, with no account or card. Pro costs $79 a year or $7.99 a month, removes the weekly cap and signs in with an email code.
